When you leave for work in the morning you can look out for empty plastic bottles. It is something simple you can do and you almost always find them on the street. There’s no reason why you can’t do it on the way back home too. An everyday plastic bottle pick up.
Jon often does a plastic bottle pick up on his way to the tube station on Dean Road (which is always full of empty plastic!) and then pops it in the recycling bin at the station or back at home. If everyone did this one small thing it would really help reduce our plastic waste.

HOW TO RECYCLE PLASTIC BOTTLES
- Replace lids and tops. If they stay on the container they will get recycled.
- Squash bottles to save space.
- Empty and rinse bottles. Left over foods or liquids can contaminate other recyclables and if bottles contain liquid they may not be recycled as deemed too heavy by the automated sorting process. Liquid can also damage the machinery.
- Leave on labels – the recycling plant will remove them in the process.

As an estimate, people use an average of 35.8 million plastic bottles EVERY DAY in the UK, but recycle plants only recycle 19.8 million each day. This means there are on average 16 million plastic bottles a day not making their way into the recycling bin.
