Jon recently discovered an amazing project taking place, the Great Green Wall in Africa. Already 15% complete over the last decade, the aim is to grow an 8,000km natural wonder of the world across Africa. It is located on the southernmost edge of the Sahara desert in the Sahel region. So, the idea of it is to create food security and jobs. Also, a reason for communities to stay in the area.
Of course, it is great for the environment too as it will create a huge carbon sink and promote rainfall. The plan is to halt the advancing tide of the Sahara desert as well. Once complete, it will be the largest living structure on the planet. It will be three times the size of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.
The reason why it caught Jon’s eye is that he is interested in development in Africa. Countries there are often leading the way when it comes to environmental solutions. Perhaps due to the fact that developing nations and poorer citizens will suffer the most from the impact of climate change. For instance, Kenya has banned the use of plastic bags completely so they don’t blight its landscape. Ethiopia is a nation of tree planters, they planted more than 350 million trees in 12 hours in July 2019. And now, the people of Sahel are working to secure a happier and brighter future thanks to these great examples.
